What is The Edinburgh Clothing Store?

The Edinburgh Clothing Store (ECS) is a charity run by volunteers, offering clothing, shoes, bedding, etc for people in genuine need. It's a free service and no money changes hands.

Over 120 caring agencies including Health Visitors, Social Workers, Hostels for the Homeless, Women's Aid, Job Centres and SACRO refer people to the ECS.

Over 1500 people are referred to us every year and the demand for our services is still rising.

How do people access the service?

Anyone needing the help of the ECS has to be referred by a social care or health agency.

Due to the Coronavirus the way the Clothing Store operates has had to change.

From 27th October the Store will be open: Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for appointments between 10.00am – 12.30pm

To make appointments phone 0131 552 1111 between 10.00am – 12.30pm

When the referring agent phones he/she will be given a time when a volunteer from the Clothing Store will phone the client to find out what they would like and to get their measurements.

Clients can no longer come to choose what they would like. Instead the appropriate items will be put together, based on the information received from the client. A time to collect these items will be given to the client when he/she is phoned. When clients come to collect they MUST wear a mask.

People should come at their appointment time to the Edinburgh Clothing Store, 156 Lower Granton Road to collect their made up bag(s) of clothes etc.

How often can people come?

  • Adults may be referred every 4-6 months
  • Children may be referred every 3 months.
  • Bedding and towels will normally be given only once a year.

What makes this free service possible?

In two words, volunteers and donations. The ECS is run totally by volunteers. With over 1,500 people referred to the service annually, donations of money and good quality clothing, bedding and towels are needed.

Due to the coronavirus PLEASE RING BEFORE YOU BRING – 0131 552 1111

Appointments must be made and donations will be limited to 2 bags at a time. We are sorry but there is very limited space due to restrictions.

We no longer accept curtains, duvets and pillows (unless they are new) and clothing for babies under 9 months,

Is everything second hand?

The vast majority of stock is second hand, which has always been sorted and checked before it goes on the shelves. New underwear and socks are bought regularly and occasionally there are other new items.
